Officers Heading to South Padre Island for Crisis Intervention Training

The Fayette County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a request last Thursday to pay for training in South Padre Island for up to two officers from each law enforcement agency in the County. The money will come from the County Attorney’s Forfeiture Fund.

County Attorney Peggy Supak made the request. In a letter to the Commissioners, Supak said the training would be about crisis intervention, which typically involves law enforcement interactions with people suffering a mental health crisis. The training will take place April 28- 30 in South Padre. The cost is $225 per officer. Supak said the participating law enforcement agencies would pay for hotel rooms, travel and meals.

The money in the County Attorney’s Forfeiture Fund comes from cash and the proceeds of assets seized during criminal investigations.

State law dictates how those funds can be spent. Allowed activities include training for law enforcement.

“The use of those funds for this type of training will be a good investment for future investigations,” Supak said.
