“After many months of investigation and hard work day and night – including the city police, constables and sheriff’s department, we have cleared up 12 burglary cases here in La Grange, one in Schulenburg and one out near Nechanitz,” Fayette County Sheriff T.J. Flournoy reported. Three juveniles and two adults had been arrested. “All of them had been picked up for questioning before, and we knew they were the ones pulling the jobs, but we could not pin it on them until we got this break.” Sheriff Flournoy praised the teamwork of the law enforcement agencies that participated in helping to split the case wide open.

The Lower Colorado River Authority’s board of directors authorized the sale of $50 million in bonds to help finance the Fayette County coal-fired generating plant. Most of the money was to be spent on facilities and equipment for the site. The LCRA board also closed out an aborted project to build a nuclear plant in conjunction with the City of San Antonio.

Ground was broken Tuesday afternoon on the $695,760 low-rent housing project, four years and one month after city council appointed the La Grange Housing Authority.

Seniors in the top 10% of the La Grange High School Class of 1975 were: Justin Bartos, Kay Davis, Barbara Fischer, Margaret Joost, Barbara Kobersky, Darrell Matula, Roberta McMillion, Neal Miller, Gale Minzenmeyer, Victor Sylvia and Lucia Williams.

Members of the 1975 La Grange High School graduating class placed a memorial floral arrangement from their commencement exercises on the grave of Ray Allen Koenning, who had been a member of their class.

Four La Grange High School band entries in the UIL State Solo and Ensemble contest in Austin returned home with medals. Receiving Division II (excellent) solo ratings were: Mary Ann Hruska, Lois Krause, Lillie Krause and Donna Wallace. Also receiving Division II recognition was the flute trio of Lillie Krause, Margaret Joost and Donna Wallace. Earning a Division III rating was the clarinet trio of Nancy Prause, Nancy Zbranek and Kathleen Moerbe, and a tuba solo by Edward Anderson.

Gilbert Lee Baca, 12, the trap drummer of the Gil Baca Band of Houston, planned to back up his granddad, Ray Baca Sr. of Fayetteville, at the Square Fair in La Grange.

The La Grange Recreational Association was opening the swimming pool with a Splash Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission was 75¢. All proceeds from the activity were being donated to the museum/library fund.

A free art day school for children aged 7 to 15 was being offered at Winedale. Participants had to furnish their own transportation and be able to attend all five days of the program. The classes were being taught by Ms. Audrey McClinchie of Austin and an assistant. Ms. McClinchie, who had a fine arts degree from Syracuse University of New York, had been teaching at St. Edward’s University in Austin.

The Town of Round Top (population 79), the smallest incorporated town in the state, was celebrating Fayette County Heritage Day on June 7 by becoming a Bicentennial City after participating in the Square Fair Parade in La Grange. Mayor Don Nagel and the town council planned to go back to Round Top to receive the town’s official Bicentennial Flag from the Texas American Revolution Bicentennial Commission chair.

Formerly of Houston, Kenneth Schmidt began duties Monday as a patrolman for the Texas Department of Public Safety in La Grange. He was the son of former residents Mr. and Mrs. Kenny L. Stork.

Mrs. Leona C. Giese presented a $750 check from the La Grange Garden Club to Rev. Harry Mazurkiewicz, the chair of the Fayette Heritage Museum/Library fundraising committee. With this second gift, the garden club’s contribution totaled $1,250.

Eighth graders Bruce Freudenberg and Nancy Hensel were presented with Americanism awards by the La Grange American Legion Post.

Cadet John W. Mode, the son of Dr. and Mrs. W.G. Mode of La Grange, was graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., with a bachelor of science degree and would be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He would begin his five-year tour of duty at Fort Still, Oklahoma, before leaving for Frankfurt, Germany.

C. A. Weishuhn’s service station on S. Jefferson St. in La Grange was named Phillips Petroleum Company’s station of the month.

Fifty-four youngsters with muscular dystrophy from the San Antonio and Corpus Christi areas were enjoying a week of camping at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. Kenneth Weber, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Weber of La Grange, was serving as one of the attendants.

Schulenburg High School’s Myron Hardeman, who won a state championship in the 100-yard dash and a member of the winning 440yard relay team, signed a letter of intent with Texas A&I University in Kingsville.

Funeral services were held for: Joe P. Pampell, 86, of Winchester; Mrs. Adele Coufal, 83, of Haw Creek; and Larry Baumbach, 28, of Ellinger.
