Multiple Fires Keep Officials Busy All Weekend

Firefighters around the County had a busy weekend.

La Grange firefighters were called out to an eightacre fire on Kollaja Rd. that started shortly after noon on Friday. Fire Chief Frank Menefee said a resident set a small brush fire that got out of control. Firefighters had just finished putting it out when another call came over the radio. Around 1:50 p.m., Ellinger Volunteer Fire Department received a call about a small grass fire near the intersection of Kitchen Rd. and SH 71. At that point, a strong wind was blowing. Ellinger firefighters called for assistance from La Grange VFD. They quickly put out the fire.

Fire trucks barely got back to the station when another call came in, this time for grass fire at the end of Zapalac Rd. near Ellinger. A quickly moving fire had burned about 12 acres of pasture by the time firefighters arrived. Ellinger, La Grange and Fayetteville VFDs responded.

On Saturday, Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department battled a fire involving two dozen hay bales on Holub Rd. While fighting that fire, they got a call about a grass fire west of Schulenburg.
