Mold Issues Could Send City Hall, Police Station Into Old FEC Building Temporarily
City Still Plans to Eventually Tear Down FEC Building
The City of La Grange might use the old Fayette Electric Cooperative (FEC) building as a temporary headquarters while renovations take place at City Hall.
La Grange City Manager Jack Thompson mentioned the plan at the City Council meeting Monday night, May 11.
Last year, the City hired the company Parkhill to conduct a facilities assessment at City Hall, the Police Station and Randolph Rec Center. Back in May, Parkhill presented their findings to the Council. The company identified serious mold issues at both City Hall and the Police Station.
The City purchased the old FEC property at 357 N. Wash-ington St. in 2024 with plans to convert it into a downtown plaza.
At Monday’s meeting, resident Theresa Von Rosenberg spoke during the public participation period and asked about the status of the property. Thompson said the City plans to eventually tear down the headquarters building. The old FEC headquarters building, which opened in 1964, was designed by noted architect Edward Mattingly, the same architect who designed La Grange City Hall.
“Right now, we’re probably going to need it to house City Hall temporarily while we get rid of a mold issue,” Thompson said.
