MLK March Here Saturday

A “Unity in the Community” celebration will take place on the Courthouse Square in La Grange on Saturday, Jan. 18.

The event will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which officially takes place on Monday, Jan. 20. The Fayette County Juneteenth Committee organizes the event.

The fourth annual Martin Luther King Jr. March will begin at the Fayette Public Library at 11:30 a.m. and end on the Square downtown. A downtown block party will follow with music, food and entertainment.

One of the organizers, Walter Culberson, spoke to the Fayette County Commissioners Court last Thursday about the event.

“The whole purpose of it is to unite the community, not just La Grange, but the surrounding towns in Fayette County,” Culberson said. “This will be our fourth annual MLK March. We usually start it at the Courthouse and end at the library. This year, we had the idea to start at the library and bring it back to the Courthouse.”

Culberson said the committee wanted to hold the event on the Square this year because it’s such a popular location for other community events like Schmeckenfest.

The Commissioners Court voted unanimously to allow the Juneteenth Committee to use the Courthouse lawn, Founders Park restrooms and electrical outlets for the event.
