Maxwell to Be Honored For Saving Life of Fellow Officer

La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath announced that The 100 Club will present La Grange Patrol Officer Mitchell Maxwell with an Officer of the Year award.

Gilbreath nominated Maxwell for the award after saving the life of fellow officer Kevin Currington on May 9 of last year. Currington had just finished locking the gate at Northside Park that night when his Sig Sauer P320 service weapon unintentionally discharged. The Sig Sauer P320 pistol has been the subject of numerous lawsuits over similar incidents across the country. The bullet struck Currington’s right leg and severed an artery.

Currington called for help on the radio and Maxwell rushed to the scene. Maxwell, along with a citizen who lives nearby, Michael Pechal, applied tourniquets to Currington’s leg and stopped the bleeding. EMS credited their actions with saving his life. Just a few months prior to the incident, Chief Gilbreath issued tourniquets to all of his officers and ordered them to undergo tourniquet training.

The 100 Club, a Houstonbased non-profit, provides support for the families of officers and firefighters killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. The organization also recognizes officers like Maxwell for exceptional action in the line of duty.

The award presentation will take at The 100 Club’s Annual Heroes Banquet on May 20. Maxwell will be among 23 police officer and 23 firefighters receiving awards at this year’s banquet.
