Man Dies in Fall From Roof at Camp Tejas

A construction worker at Camp Tejas died in a fall on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

Lee County Sheriff Garrett Durrenberger reports his office received a call around 9:36 a.m. about a workplace accident at Camp Tejas, which is located along a private road off US 77 between Giddings and La Grange.

The caller reported the worker had fallen from a roof and was unresponsive. Sheriff Garrett Durrenberger and Deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene along with Lee County EMS, and Constables AJ Gonzales and Billy Stephens. Investigators determined that 33-year-old Victor Antonio Barrios Castillo had fallen from the roof after disabling his safety harness to retrieve some fasteners. Castillo suffered fatal injuries in the fall. Lee County Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Michael York responded to the scene to hold an inquest.

“The Lee County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is leading the investigation into this incident to ensure all circumstances are thoroughly reviewed,” Durrenberger said.

According to the Sheriff, Castillo was a resident of Venezuela and had family ties in El Paso.

“The Sheriff’s Office has been in contact with his family to provide support during this difficult time,” Durrenberger said. “The Lee County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to Mr. Castillo’s family and loved ones.”
