Local Man Dies in Motorcycle Accident

A La Grange man died in a motorcycle crash near Waldeck after a pickup truck pulled in front of him on FM 1291 Saturday night, May 14.

The driver of the pickup, 58-year-old William Kubena of Fayetteville, faces a charge of intoxication manslaughter. The victim was 56-year-old Alan Barnes of La Grange.

The crash happened at the intersection of FM 1291 and FM 2145 around 7:21 p.m., according to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Kubena was driving a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The pickup was stopped at the intersection and attempted to turn east on FM 2145.

Barnes was driving a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle west on FM 2145.

The report said Kubena failed to yield the right of way as it turned at the intersection. The Toyota struck the motorcycle. Both vehicles came to rest in the intersection.

The report said Barnes died at the scene. Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Kyle Hartmann recorded the time of death at 8:06 p.m.

DPS Trooper April Galvan arrested Kubena for intoxication manslaughter. Kubena was booked into the Dan R. Beck Justice Center in La Grange. He was released the following day after posting a bond of $20,000.

Kubena is listed as a teacher and head boys basketball coach on the Dime Box ISD website.
