Local Houston Livestock Show Winners
On Saturday, March 3, the Flatonia FFA Nursery Landscape team and the floral team competed at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and placed 2nd. Pictured are team members Aidan Miksch, Laura James, Kodi Harris, and Keaton Borgesteadte. Aidan Miksch was 4th high point individual, Laura James was 6th high point individual and Kodi Harris was 10th high point individual. The Schulenburg Livestock Judging Team of Haley Schramek, Blane Warnken, Grant Kubala, Blake Meyer, Madyson Holub and Kyrroll Prihoda competed in Houston. Blake Meyer won grand champion Dorper market sheep in Houston. On Saturday March 12 Flatonia FFA member Railey Nieto competed in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo calf scramble. Railey was the first to catch a calf and was invited back to the ultimate scramble on Saturday, March 19, where he received an extra $1,000 in price money. Each student who catches a calf at the Houston Livestock Show is awarded a $1,750 certificate to purchase a registered beef heifer or market steer to show at the following Houston Livestock Show. Returning as an exhibitor, the student shows in a special competition with other calf scramble and judging contest winners. The student receives a $500 bonus if program requirements are fulfilled throughout the year. Blaine Zapalac won grand champion in the Holstein division of the dairy show in Houston. Blake Meyer won third place in his class in the ag mechanics show for a 16-foot lowboy trailer he built. Schulenburg FFA member CJ Prihoda caught a calf in the Calf Scramble on March 5. There were 165 exhibitors in the show that competed in Record Book program, Meat ID and Test, Beef industry Knowledge Test, Professional Interviews, and Quality and Yield Grading of the steers. Grant was named a top 8 finalist and placed 4th in the Commercial Steer Show. Landry Zapalac won grand champion in the Brown Swiss division of the dairy show in Houston. Brysen Brown won first place in the Rodeo Cup Floral Design competition. She is pictured with members of the Houston Livestock Show Horticulture Committee.
Several Fayette County youth competed at the Houston Livestock Show last month and brought home awards.
Schulenburg
Landry Zapalac won grand champion female in the Junior Dairy Brown Swiss Show with her cow “Zap-Tex Dynamite Sangria.” Blaine Zapalac won grand champion female in the Junior Dairy Holstein Show with his cow “Erbacres Soloman Delanie.” Blaine Zapalac also placed first in the Texas State Holstein Show.
Blake Meyer won grand champion in Dorper market sheep. Meyer also won third place in his class in the ag mechanics show for a 16-foot lowboy trailer he built.
Grant Kubala was the 4th place overall exhibitor in the commercial steer show. Kloe Kutac won 3rd place in the Santa Gertrudis division of the breeding beef heifer show, and Haley Schramek won third place in the Brangus heifer division.
Schulenburg’s livestock judging team of Blane Warnken, Blake Meyer, and Grant Kubala placed 6th out of 384 teams. Kubala was the 6th high point individual in the contest, and he was awarded a calf scramble certificate for his success. Haley Schramek, Madyson Holub and Kyrroll Prihoda also competed in the judging competition.
In the calf scramble steer show, Blane Warnken placed 6th in the show and 5th for his business plan.
Bryson Brown won first place in the Rodeo Cup Floral Design Contest. Jordan Sommer and Katelyn Holub placed 7th in the Dining Duets Floral Competition.

Calf Scramble
Several Fayette County youth caught calves in the calf scramble. THose students received a $1,750 certificate to purchase a registered beef heifer or market steer to exhibit at the 2023 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. They can also receive a $500 bonus if program requirements are fulfilled throughout the year. The following youth caught calves in the contest:
