Local Animal Shelter Took in 1,682 Pets Last Year

That’s a wrap in 2024 with a flurry of furry friends. GJAS staff, volunteers, fosters, and transporters had the privilege of caring for 1,682 Fayette County dogs and cats in need. With your help GJAS has saved 97% of those lives and found new forever homes all over the country. In five years, GJAS has found forever families in 39 states and Canada for hundreds of Fayette County’s unwanted dogs and cats.

GJAS has treated heartworms, countless parasites, gastrointestinal viruses, broken limbs, mange, and more ringworm than you could imagine along with so much more. GJAS fosters have bottle fed hundreds of kittens and cleaned up after hundreds of puppies and nursed three sweet mommas through birth. Dog walkers have logged hundreds of miles up and down Svoboda Lane with amazing dogs waiting on their own family to love. With your support and the support of our Fayette County veterinarian partners, GJAS has sterilized over 700 dogs and cats.

2024 has been particularly challenging for animal welfare organizations all over the country. Record intake numbers and unprecedented low adoption rates are forcing many organizations to make the heart wrenching decision of peaceful euthanasia; and that includes your own community shelter. A longer length of stay is often more harmful than good for some dogs and cats and more importantly every dog and cat we have in our care is not adoptable sometimes due to injury, illness, or other unfortunate circumstances like behavior.

GJAS will continue to provide this important public service to Fayette County and march forward in this mission to save everyone we can.

The staff and volunteers will show up every day and do everything we can to ensure the dogs and cats in our care have everything they need including lots of love, ear scratches, and belly rubs. GJAS is eternally grateful for every dollar, bag of food, paper towels, cleaning supplies, the list of supplies used every day is endless.

How can you help?

• Please spay and neuter your pets. Contact the shelter at (979) 966-0021 to learn more about our discount voucher program.

• Microchip your pets – GJAS has no way to help reunite without some identifying information. We can microchip your pets at the shelter for $15 or FREE if your pet(s) are spayed or neutered

• Join our volunteer team. GJAS needs whisker scratchers and belly rubbers, administrative help with phones, filing, laundry. GJAS can’t continue this work without volunteers.

• Not looking for a lifetime commitment? Join our foster team and enjoy some furry cuddling for a couple of weeks at a time. Fostering saves lives.

• Please donate – GJAS operates on the compassion of our community. Fayette County municipalities fund about 13% of our annual budget. We cannot survive without donors.
