Local Agencies Complete Active Shooter Training in La Grange
Police officers, EMS personnel and firefighters respond together when disasters strike. High intensity, high stress situations require training and interagency cooperation. The most intense and stressful situation that a responders can face is an attack on a school, church, or community gathering.
On March 3 and 4, agencies from around the county received in-depth training on the best practices for these situations. Agencies included the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County EMS, Schulenburg PD, Flatonia PD, La Grange PD, Pct. 1 Constable, Game Warden, DPS and Fayetteville ISD.
County Judge Joe Weber stated “This type of training has been a priority of mine since assuming the Office of Fayette County Judge. I appreciate all the County First Responders and the County Office of Emergency Management for working together to bring this critical training to our County. The need for this type of preparedness cannot be overstated and is key to insuring the safety of us all.”
The Active Attacker Integrated Response (AAIR) course was hosted by the Fayette County Emergency Management Office at Crosspoint Community Church. EMS and Law Enforcement drilled on how to respond to a threat, moving together as a group, and advanced medical intervention in an uncontrolled environment. Police officers were trained on how to use tourniquets, wound packing, and chest seal applications. EMS learned how to tactically move with law enforcement to prevent further death and dying and the importance of rapid intervention.
This was the first of several planned training sessions. Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau stated, “We are planning on hosting additional classes for first responders, but I also recognize a need to train teachers, county employees, and citizens on how to take decisive actions when their lives are threatened. We must recognize that bad things can happen anywhere and plan accordingly”.
