Literacy Day Celebrated
Parents as Teachers of Rural South Central Texas, in collaboration with the Stanzel Model Aircraft Museum, hosted a joyful International Literacy Day celebration on Saturday, Sept. 6. The event brought together 133 community members, uniting families in a day filled with reading, exploration, and hands-on activities.
The day launched with creativity and curiosity as children dove into fairy tale– inspired STEAM stations, blending science, technology, engineering, art, and math with the magic of storybooks. Families enjoyed exploring the museum, bringing learning to life through interactive experiences. To fuel the fun, attendees were treated to nursery rhyme–themed snacks and drinks. A highlight of the celebration was the dedication of the Melinda Stanzel Barneycastle Memorial Lil’ Library, a new Little Free Library now open to the public. This lasting community resource will ensure families have ongoing access to books, encouraging a love of reading for years to come. Each child left with a free book to continue the magic of literacy at home.
“Little Readers - Big Adventures” truly came to life thanks to the collaboration of Parents as Teachers, the Stanzel Museum, and the incredible support of organizations like Building Resilience Inclusion Diversity and Growth thru Education (BRIDGE), along with Elaine Hernandez. Their dedication made the event a soaring success. For updates on future events and resources for families, follow Parents as Teachers of Rural South Central Texas on Facebook or visit www.sw-pat.org.
