LGISD Second Graders Hold Market Day

The second grade hallway at La Grange Elementary School seemed as busy as the floor of the New York Stock Exchange Tuesday afternoon during the Second Grade Market Day.
LGISD Second Graders Hold Market Day

The second grade class at La Grange Elementary School held a Market Day on Tuesday, May 24.

The students were split into groups that each formed a “business.” The groups created products and developed marketing materials such as video commercials. Each business set up a booth in the second grade hallway on Tuesday where they offered their products for sale to other students.

“It’s a financial literacy program,” said second grade teacher Sherry Schmidt. “In January, they started earning ‘dollars’ for behavior, bringing back their homework and special things.”

The ‘dollars’ they earned look like Monopoly game money.

“They earn and save so they can come to Market Day,” Schmidt said. “They form businesses. They decide their products. Then we send home letters with the supplies they need, and it’s all fun kid stuff. They make their products. They come up with a business name. And they have to decide how much their products are going to cost.”

On Market Day, the kids got to take turns as consumers buying products from each of the businesses.
