Camp Summit Report

Director of Curriculum Tracy Head spoke to the board on the success of Camp Summit this year. Camp Summit is an invitation only summer intervention program just based on student data and academic need throughout the year. The goal is to reduce that summer reading regression over time and then provide additional support those students need for that next grade level that they’re about to enter.

Head told the board, “This year nearly 70% of our invited families committed to attending all 18 days of our program. That allowed us to serve 55 students, which is the most we’ve served in our eight years of doing that. That was almost 10 more students than we served last year. We did bump our numbers because we hate to turn anybody away, but we made it work and it was fabulous.”

She presented a video showcasing many of the activities that the students participated in this summer and she also had some students at the board meeting who presented a readers’ theatre version of “The Three Little Pigs.”

Student Transfers

Superintendent Andy McHazlett told the board that as of May 30 (which is the deadline for accepting transfer students) that 68 students have been approved for transfer into LGISD. The breakdown by campuses is as follows: elementary school – 40, 33 of which are returning from last year; middle school – 12, which no new students; and high school – 16. These students are transfers from 12 different school districts. This brings the total number of transfers to 68. The maximum number allowed by the district is 85.
