LG Woman Perishes in Plum Wreck

The woman who died in the crash near Plum on Sunday, June 22, was 78-year-old Mildred Sue Cunningham of La Grange.

Trooper Pedro Rodriguez with the Texas Highway Patrol investigated the crash, which happened around 11 a.m. Rodriguez said Cunningham was a passenger in a Chevy Colorado pickup truck. The truck was at the stop sign on the west end of Loop 220 in Plum and attempted to cross the westbound side of SH 71.

Rodriguez said there was heavy traffic on SH 71 that morning. He said the driver misjudged the traffic and pulled out when the roadway was not clear. A black BMW car heading west struck the Chevy in the side. The Chevy rolled over. Cunningham was severely injured in the wreck and later succumbed.

The driver and passenger in the black BMW sustained minor injuries.

Lots of folks were in Plum that morning for the annual Sts. Peter and Paul Church Picnic. Rodriguez said Cunningham and the driver of the pickup had been at the picnic and were leaving when the wreck happened. However, he said traffic from the picnic did not contribute to the accident.

Rodriguez said many wrecks have happened at the same location. He attributed the high number of wrecks to the curve in the highway just east of the intersection, which he said makes it hard for drivers on Loop 220 to judge the oncoming traffic.
