League of Women Voters Hold First Adopt-a-Highway Clean Up June 13

The League of Women Voters of South Central Texas recently joined the network of 3,400 groups participating in the Texas Department of Transportation’s Adopt-a-Highway Program. As a participant, the League has agreed to hold four cleanups a year for a minimum of two years on a two-mile stretch of Hwy. 90 in Fayette County.

The League of Women Voters of South Central Texas invites you to join us in our first Adopt-A-Highway cleanup scheduled for Monday, June 13, from 8-10 a.m. They will meet in the parking lot of the Fayette County Precinct 4 Road and Bridge facility at 1801 W Hwy. 90 near the Schulenburg city limits. Participants are asked to wear long-sleeved shirts and fulllength pants, closed-toed shoes, a hat, and sunglasses (if desired) and bring a reusable water bottle, as we will supply chilled water. We will also provide instructions, a map, sunscreen, bug spray, reflective vests, and collection bags. Not only is volunteering a wonderful way to meet new friends, but you will create an immediate benefit for our community.

The League of Women Voters of South Central Texas serves Colorado, DeWitt, Fayette, Gonzales, and Lavaca Counties in our rural South Central Texas area. It is one of 34 local Leagues in Texas and more than 800 Leagues across the United States. The League is a nonpartisan, grassroots civic organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Membership in the League is open to people 16 years and older of all gender identities. With over 100 years of experience, the League is one of America’s oldest and most trusted civic nonprofit organizations.

The original Adopt-a-Highway program began in Texas in 1985. Since then, it’s grown into a nationally and internationally recognized litter-prevention effort, saving taxpayers’ dollars and keeping our rights of way clean.
