Officials and engineers of the Lower Colorado River Authority and Bechtel Engineering spent over two hours Friday night explaining the why’s, when’s and how’s of the proposed coal-fired electric generating plant to an audience of approximately 600 at the La Grange public school auditorium. A senior LCRA manager assured the audience that the LCRA had been in the environmental business for years and all matters pertaining to environmental and pollution controls would be taken up with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Water Quality Board. LCRA General Manager Charles Herring promised this would be the best and cleanest plant ever built.
The 124th time around for Round Top Independence Day celebrations on July 4 would feature something altogether new: a giant-size hot air balloon that would hover over the big street parade beginning at 10:30. A total of 56,400 cubic feet of hot air would be required to inflate the 80-foothigh, 50-foot diameter balloon. Albert F. Schilieci of American Air Lines, John Anderson of United Air Lines and Fredie Dinan of Eastern Air Lines were providing the hot air. The three men were pilots with their respective airlines and also licensed balloonists from Florida and California. The Gas’d, as the balloon was called, could fly for four hours on one firing of 44 gallons of propane and carry four people. Following the parade, the three visitors planned to cut the balloon loose and let the winds take it (and them) away. Schatte Real Estate and the Round Top General Store sponsored the balloon’s visit.
On Sunday morning, a fire of an undetermined origin caused heavy damage to the year-old Joseph Sengler home in the Frisch Auf! Oaks subdivision on Monument Hill. Heavy smoke blanketed the upstairs, ruining carpeting, clothes, television, tape player, books and other furnishings. It was estimated that the damage could total as much as $20,000 to $30,000. Mr. Sengler said the fire may have originated in wiring, a faulty extension cord or a plug behind a bookcase. A hole was burned through a bedroom wall.
A funeral service was held for Victor Adamcik, 51, a native of Dubina.
