The Schulenburg City Council signed a proclamation Monday night, June 6, honoring former Schulenburg Coach Larry Tidwell for his long career in high school and college basketball.

Tidwell spent eight years in Schulenburg in the late 1980s and early 1990s as high school athletic director. He went on to become a successful college women’s basketball coach. He was recently inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

“This hits home, I mean this from the bottom of my heart,” Tidwell said. “I’m 69 years old, and the eight years I was here were the best eight years of my life. Not my coaching life, but my entire life.

“I’ve had quite a few honors, but this means more to me than any honor or any hall of fame I might go into,” he added.

Tidwell spoke about the Schulenburg community’s support for teachers and coaches.

“When the kids got in trouble at school, they would get in trouble at home with the parents, too,” he said. “That made a difference.

“These young women and men who grew up here are now making a difference not only in Schulenburg, but throughout the State,” he said. “Being a part of that was exceptional.”

Tidwell, who most recently served as the head women’s basketball coach at Dallas Christian College, announced earlier this year that he would retire at the end of this basketball season. He couldn’t stay retired long, however. Tidwell told the City Council Monday night that he has accepted a position as the associate women’s basketball coach at the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

“I’m going over there to help a friend with her basketball team,” Tidwell said. “But I will be back.”

Tidwell told the Record that he plans to move back to Schulenburg upon retirement.
