Superb pitching and timely hitting paid off for the La Grange Little LeagueAll-Stars in Yoakum as they sacked up the district championship with a 10-2 victory over Brenham. Greg Trlicek throttled Brenham’s powerful batters. Of La Grange’s six hits, three were doubles, driving across two runs each. Marvin Marburger scored two of the doubles.

The cost-of-living salary increase approved by Fayette County commissioners for county employees was in the neighborhood of 10%. They decided on a formula in which 10% of the payroll of all employees involved would be divided among them. Therefore, each employee would receive an increase in dollars, but not an equal percentage. (The salary increase did not apply to elected and appointed employees.)

Spotty rainfall across the area Saturday morning brought a bit of a respite from the intense heat wave that had plagued this part of the state for more than a week. However, it accomplished little in the way of breaking the extended dry spell playing havoc with pastures. One exception was an isolated area several miles east of Winchester where 7.5 inches of rain fell from 7 a.m. until noon. La Grange officially measured 1.03 inches.

Glynis Tietjen, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Egon Tietjen of the Swiss Alp local, was crowned Fayette County Farm Bureau Queen. Glynis, 17, a senior at Schulenburg High School in the fall, was to represent the county at the District XI contest on August 16 at Wharton. She was crowned by the 1973 queen, Cindy Petras. First runnerup was Donna Zapalac, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Zapalac. Second runner-up was Jeanette Reinhardt, the daughter of Marvin Reinhardt and the late Mrs. Reinhardt. Glynis also was selected as the talent contest winner. In the Little Miss category, Theresa Brandt, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Brandt of the Holman local, was crowned the winner.

Round Top-Warrenton Volunteer Fire Chief S.J. Engstrom warned people to be a little more careful about fires because his department had answered 16 calls so far in 1974. Eleven were grass fires, two auto fires, two barn fires and one house fire.

The arrest of a 14-yearold youth in Flatonia led to the resolution of seven recent petty burglaries in the Flatonia area. Deputies apprehended the youth almost in the act of going into a house in Flatonia, Fayette County Sheriff T.J.

Flournoy said.

Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Marie R. Wessels, 85, of Rutersville; Carolina Vitek, 86, of Fayetteville; Miss Ellie Bader, 79, of Industry; Mrs. Iva B. Meyer, 81, of Carmine; Max Eichler, 78, a native of Carmine; and Mrs. Carolina Vitek, 86, of Fayetteville.

First class winners in the senior division of district 4-H record book judging were: William Ernestes, agriculture; Daniel Cernoch, citizenship; Jeannette Reinhardt, food preservation; Kenneth Zapalac, leadership; and Rhode Brand, home management.

William F. Jurajda was sworn in as Ellinger’s 11th postmaster. Mr. Jurajda began his postal career in 1968 as a substitute clerk. Retired postmaster D.A. Juren gave a short history of the Ellinger Post Office, which dated back to 1877. Postmasters from Weimar, Fayetteville and La Grange also attended.

The project to collect blood for the assistance of Leo F. Tiemann, sponsored by the Chromcik Council, Knights of Columbus at the KJT Home Office Sunday in La Grange, was termed a huge success. A total of 116 units of blood were drawn. Gold ‘n Crisp provided food and R.C. Bottling Co. furnished drinks for the 17 M.D. Anderson Blood Bank technicians in attendance.
