La Grange Leo Club Hears From Colorado Valley Communications Project Manager
The La Grange Leo club appreciates Senior Project Manager Mr. David Jones with Colorado Valley Communications Inc. (CVC) for sponsoring their October meetings.
Mr. Jones spoke to the students about the Fiber to the Home project. Samples of cable fibers were available for the students to view. Mr. Jones gave a brief history of communications, fiber cables, and high speed internet. He also provided an interesting analogy of how in the past, Naval ships used signal lamps by flashing bright lights and transmit Morse code to communicate with other vessels versus today’s fiber optics which also use light to send signals. CVC is currently deploying Gigabyte Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology where light passes through splitters that divide the light to continue to individual homes. This technology allows for multi-Gigabyte bandwidth to individual customers. They are essentially building a new network in less than 15 years to replace a network that took 70 years to build originally.
