La Grange Distilling Company Takes Another Step Forward to Becoming a Reality
La Grange City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to allow alcohol distilling in the historic downtown square Monday night, July 24.
The ordinance will allow La Grange Distilling Co. to move forward with their plans for a gin distilling school and store front at 229 W. Travis St., across from the Fayette County Courthouse.
Owners David and Vicki McGrath plan to locate their main distillery in a different building in town where the zoning regulations allow it. They requested the ordinance change for the downtown location because the gin school would involve small-scale distilling.
The zoning ordinance for the downtown historic district in La Grange currently prohibits the manufacture of alcoholic spirits. The Council held a public hearing before voting to amend the ordinance.
No one spoke during the hearing. The Council passed the first reading of the ordinance without opposition.
Council will vote on a second and final reading of the ordinance at a future meeting.
