Jan Hill Running for La Grange School Board

Jan Hill Running for La Grange School Board

Hi there! My name is Jan Hill, and I hope to represent you on the La Grange ISD school board, Place 1. I love people... especially students and teachers.

This June, my middle school sweetheart (Dennis Hill) and I are grateful to be celebrating 50 years of marriage. We have three children who are each LGISD alumni: Emily Gonzalez married to Quenten, Jeff Hill married to Christine, and Rachel Hill married to Kolbe. Eight of our ten grandchildren are currently attending LGISD, or attended in the past.

I graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1976 with a Master’s Degree in Education, and went on to teach math in public schools for 25 years. During that time, my husband was a coach and teacher in the public school system as well. Because of these experiences, I feel that I am well acquainted with the various areas of public education.

In 1997 my husband and I opened The Remnant Church in La Grange, and served as the senior pastors for 24 years. We retired in February of 2021 and now serve as Founding Pastors at The Remnant. The church grew from a storefront in Riverside Shopping Center to its present location on Von Minden Road. Over the years of pastoring, I had the opportunity to direct the children’s ministry, including training and leading children’s teachers. I was also blessed with the opportunity to open and direct The Remnant Academy (daycare facility) in 2007. It has grown from 12 students, one director, and one teacher, to 86 students, two di-rectors, and 15 teachers. I still enjoy serving at The Remnant Academy part-time.

Why do I want to be on the school board? I strongly believe that the experiences I have had with children and teachers over the past 49 years (in public schools, children’s church, and daycare) have provided me with insight and ideas that will benefit LGISD.

One of my passions is school safety for students, teachers, administrators, and fans. I strongly advocate for metal detectors at all school and athletic entrances.

Another area I would focus on is providing relevant inservice programs that would support teachers and benefit the students.

There are many studies that show that sitting for long periods of time can cause students to have difficulty focusing, and they become inattentive. Especially for elementary and intermediate students, I am an advocate for outside playbreaks during the day. I am available for ques
