The City of Schulenburg uncovered some art not seen in 50 years while making repairs to City Hall last week.

City Manager Tami Walker said workers removed a small section of the marble facade while performing foundation repairs to City Hall. Underneath, they found what appears to be an old painted ice cream advertisement on the brick wall of the building. Walker said the sign may be connected to the former Carnation Milk Plant (now Dairy Farmers of America).

Walker said City Hall has suffered from some water damage. The City ordered the repairs in an effort to remedy the problem.

“Over the last couple of weeks, we have had an asbestos specialist and an inspection of the building,” she said. “We have had the roof looked at and someone to look at the brick and mortar.”

She said a structural engineer will also inspect the building.

“With the recent excitement of removing the marble veneer panels, I am confident to seek opportunity instead of problems, and attempt to restore the building,” Walker said.

The City Hall building, located at corner of Upton St. and North Main St. in downtown Schulenburg, was previously a bank.

First National Bank of Schulenburg occupied the building prior to 1989, when it merged with the company that became Victoria Bank and Trust.

The marble facade was installed during in the 1970s.
