Celebrate America’s patriotic past this 4th of July weekend with Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites. On Saturday, July 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the sites will commemorate Independence Day in true 19thcentury style with “Ich bin ein Amerikaner” – a celebration including traditional games and crafts, historical interpretation, and special guided tours—all set on the scenic Bluff.

The Bluff Schuetzenverein, a German Texan marksmanship club, held major 4th of July celebrations on the Bluff from the 1870s through 1920s. The title of the program, which means “I am an American” in German, represents the blend of German and Texan cultures which defined these gatherings. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic, enjoy the outdoors, and journey back to this historic time.

“The Fourth of July was a popular holiday for everyone in Fayette County, but German Texans adopted the day with particular enthusiasm” says Sites Educator, Railey Tassin. “This program offers a glance into how the Bluff Schuetzenverein embraced these patriotic traditions while adding their own special twists.”

At the historic Kreische house, families can create a patriotic craft inspired by late-19th century decorations, and join a classic game of bowling or croquet. Visitors can also show off their skills at the laser shooting gallery, inspired by the historic marksmanship competitions held by the Schuetzenverein. Everyone is invited to help churn a homemade sweet treat in the sites’ historic hand-cranked ice cream maker.

In addition to laser shooting, games, and crafts, guests can join a special guided tour of the sites, offered at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., which will delve deeper into Independence Day traditions associated with Monument Hill and the Bluff Schuetzenverein.

Admission is free for Friends members and children 5 and under, $2 for students, $3 for seniors, and $5 for adults. All activities and materials are included with admission. For more information, visit the Sites’ Facebook page or call the visitors center at (979) 968-5658.
