Hypocrisy

To the Editor:

The “Not in my backyard” folks are back in the news because of a lawsuit they filed in an attempt to control a neighbor (the batter storage lawsuit covered in Nov. 5 issue) . I understand, there are things that can cause nuisances such as; noises, odors, health hazards and appearances. The things the “Not in my backyard” folks don’t want often produce something that they want or need. Understandably, no one wants to be neighbors with a commercial hog farm, dairy farm, oil refinery, paint factory, electric power plant, or papermill.

There is nothing wrong with not wanting these things as your neighbor. It becomes hypocritical to be OK with these things being in someone else’s backyard while you support those operations by purchasing their products. So, if you’re a “Not in my backyarder” and you use commercially generated electricity, buy bacon or milk and put gasoline in your car, think about what this says about your character.

Remember, shop local.
