Heat Stroke Victim Rescued in Hay Field

A man was flown by helicopter from a hay field in Mullins Prairie Wednesday after suffering a possible heat stroke.

Fayette County EMS Director Josh Vandever said the call came in around 6 p.m. An 80-year-old man was working on equipment at a residence in the Holman area, he said.

An ambulance arrived and medics found the man with signs of a heat stroke. Vandever said the medics stabilized the patient at the residence. They transported him to a hay patch in Mullins Prairie to rendezvous with a Washington County EMS medical helicopter.

The patient was in serious but stable condition. Vandever said he was flown to a hospital in Austin for treatment.

The weather station at Fayette Regional Air Center recorded a temperature of 96º F at that time with a heat index of 104º.
