Formula Shortage in Fayette Co.

The nationwide shortage of baby formula continues due to supply chain shortages, distribution difficulties and the loss of a major manufacturer. Abbott, one of the largest manufacturers of formula is expected to resume production in as little as two weeks if final approval from the Food and Drug Administration is granted. In Fayette County, supplies have continued to come in to the grocery stores and pharmacies, but are limited.

La Grange Pediatrician Crystal Banks M.D. is aware of the situation and has heard the concerns of many parents. She states “before making any changes to your infant’s diet, speak with their pediatrician or provider. Many providers have samples to provide to bridge the gap in availability. All national brands including generics are similar so switching to something equivalent in a different brand or generic should be fine. When comparing formulas, look at the protein source primarily and then compare the next five ingredients to see if they match up. If they match your baby should tolerate the switch well.”

“I do not recommend using opened formula that has been ordered from sites like eBay. I also don’t recommend using expired formula or thinning it. Opened and possibly contaminated formula, expired formula, and thinned formula are all potentially detrimental to the health and growth of your baby. If getting desperate, call your baby’s provider for the next steps to take.”

Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau spoke with area stores, and non-profits about the expected supply. Moreau stated: “The stores are continuing to order all brands of formula, but only partial orders have arrived. The non-profits have limited supplies but continue to assist as they are able. The most difficult challenge is finding formula for babies that require specialized products due to allergies and health concerns. It is unclear how long this will last in our local area. Manufacturers have hotlines to request information, and community organizations such as Combined Community Action may be of assistance. The links to manufacturers and community organizations can be found at www.hhs.gov/formula.”
