Icy roads Tuesday morning contributed to a number of vehicle accidents around the County, especially on US 77 south of La Grange.

Around 10:30 a.m. first responders got a call about a pickup that slid off US 77 near Petter Rainosek Loop, about 2.5 miles south of the Bluff. The highway was caked with ice at the time. Fayette County EMS, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and La Grange Fire Department responded.

A white Toyota pickup heading south on US 77 slid off the road to the left. It crashed through a brushy fenceline and snapped the trunk of a cedar tree. The female driver and two children were able to get out. They did not appear to have any serious injuries. EMS transported them so that the children could be evaluated as a precaution.

Around the same time, an 18-wheeler jacknifed partially in the ditch on the northbound side of US 77 just north of Schulenburg near Holub Rd. The rig blocked the northbound lanes for about an hour until a heavy duty wrecker from Geissen’s Towing was able to pull it free.
