Coyote Encounter Leads to A Fatality Near Winchester

A man in Bastrop County died following a chaotic encounter with a coyote late Thursday, Aug. 13.

The incident happened off Serbin Rd. just north of the Fayette County line near Winchester.

According to Bastrop County Sheriff Maurice Cook, first responders got the call around 11:26 p.m. Cook said a coyote attacked a dog, and a man tried intervening with a machete.

“While he was doing that, we believe he had some kind of medical emergency,” Cook said.

Cook said the coyote did not attack the man. Rather, he said, the man died during his efforts to protect the dog.

A family member posted on Facebook last week that the man’s name was Jorge Luis Acuña.

The post said Acuña was protecting his daughter’s dog when he suffered a fatal heart attack.
