February Is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month

February is Spay and Neuter Awareness month. The Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter has taken in almost 200 dogs and cats in six weeks.

There is only one way to stop the cycle: spay or neuter is the solution. If your family pets, livestock guardian dogs, barn cats, your “don’t want to take away his manhood” hound dogs, the “free” puppy or kitten, tom cats are not spayed or neutered it is not an unexpected litter - you can 100% expect it.

The Fayette County stray animal overpopulation crisis is a community problem that requires a community solution. Spay and neuter is the only solution.

As of Feb. 14, the total intake for 2025 is 197: 93 dogs and 104 cats in need. There are 89 animals in care: 66 dogs and 23 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, waiting on available space, or awaiting transport to a rescue partner.

Every day, fosters and volunteers help us save these lives. Stop by to learn more about these programs. The shelter cannot continue to do this work without the help of the community.
