Fayette County Retired Teachers Travel to the Swiss Alp Bison Ranch
Members of the Fayette County Retired Teachers Association traveled to Swiss Alp Bison Ranch on Oct. 14 to commemorate Indigenous People’s Day.
A brief tour of the ranch was conducted by Eric Batchelder.
Suzanne Batchelder presented information on the status of bison and their reintegration into private and public lands in the United States. She emphasized that the present number of bison in the country is currently estimated at around 400,000 in North America, down from what was estimated to be over 100 million in the 1700s.
A delicious sampling of buffalo meat was provided for the members present. Dona-tions for members in attendance will be made to the Texas Tribal Buffalo Project and to the Society of Native Nations.
A luncheon at Hattie’s Haus in Swiss Alp followed the tour. Food was provided by Scratch Foods in Schulenburg. The next meeting of the association will be on Nov. 11 at New Life Methodist Church in La Grange.
