Fayette County May Get a New Congressman Under Proposed Redistricting Plan

The Texas Legislature is set to vote over possibly changing state’s congressional districts ahead of the mid-term elections, which take place next year. The proposed changes come at the request of President Donald Trump, who wants to bolster Republican chances during the Congressional mid-terms. Pictured above is a portion of the map currently under consideration in the Legislature. If approved, Fayette County would land in U.S. House District 27, held by Republican Congressman Michael Cloud of Victoria. Currently Fayette County is part of U.S. House District 10, served by Republican Congressman Michael McCaul of Austin. Under the proposed changes, McCaul’s district would shift more to the northeast. More than 50 Democratic lawmakers fled the State on Sunday to avoid a vote on the contentious changes. The changes carve up several existing districts in Houston, Austin and Dallas that historically favored Democratic candidates. Governor Greg Abbott said he would attempt to remove the absconded Democrats from office if they do not return to Texas by 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4.
