Fayette County Fair’s Young Farmers Hay Show Results
D&R Farms won grand champion in the hay show for an entry of alfalfa. The hay brought $1,700 at auction. Buyers were M-G, Inc., Kleiber Tractor and Equipment, Fayette Savings Bank, Wick’s Water Well Service, Tex Propane, Bumper Crop Texas of Schulenburg, and Cernoch Plumbing. The winners also received 2,000 lbs. of fertilizer donated by Bumper Crop Texas. BWI of Schulenburg also donated a 225 tub of molasses with Clarify, 500 lbs. of Jumbo Ryegrass seed and 50 lbs. of Safeguard wormer cubes. The winner also received 1,000 lbs. of fertilizer donated by La Grange Farm and Ranch. The Schulenburg Young Farmers held their annual Hay Show in conjunction with the Fayette County Fair last week.
Judging took place Wednesday, Aug. 28. The auction followed on Thursday, Aug. 29, at the Emily Fritsch Pavilion in the Fayette County Fairgrounds.
The show was open to anyone who produced hay in Fayette County during the spring and summer of 2024. Entries were graded in eight categories:
• Class 1 - Coastal
• Class 2 - Other Bermuda grasses • Class 3 - Other perennial grasses • Class 4 - Mixed grasses
• Class 5 - Sorghums
• Class 6 - Winter annuals (oats and ryegrass)
• Class 7 - Legumes and Legume grass mixture.
The grand champion award went to D&R Farms for a Class 7 entry of alfalfa. Mark Stang won reserve champion with a Class 6 ryegrass entry.
