Fayette County Democrats Attend Democratic Convention in El Paso

Cecil and Marsha Webster of Carmine and Becky Schenker of La Grange represented Fayette County Democrats at the State Democratic Convention in El Paso during June 6-8. They were joined by approximately 2,000 other Democrats from across Texas.

Given that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had already wrapped up the nomination, a primary focus of the convention was in adopting its platform. Although wide encompassing, from a rural perspective, the Texas Democratic Platform supports making rural, public schools stronger and opposes any form of voucher scheme to divert public dollars to private schools; focuses attention on ensuring the availability of water for private individuals, agricultural businesses, and emergency management in rural areas; bolsters efforts to provide access to affordable, high-speed internet for all rural Texas school districts, staff, students, and families; and backs Medicaid expansion, while ensuring the vitality of healthcare and hospitals in rural communities.

In addition to both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris making video comments, convention speakers included former Congresswoman ‘Gabby’ Giffords, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, former Congressman ‘Beto’ O’Rourke, and the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, Congressman Colin Allred. Each emphasized that Texas is the largest battleground state in the nation.

Amongst personal convention highlights, Cecil Webster led the contingent of 300plus eligible delegates from Congressional District 10 in electing new district leaders for the next two years and in electing delegates to the national convention in Chicago in August. After nine years of serving on the State Democratic Executive Committee (the ‘Board of Directors’ of the Texas Democratic Party), Cecil Webster now shifts his focus to mentoring the new district leaders and their grassroots- level activities.

The next biennial Democratic Convention is in Corpus Christi in 2026.
