Fayette Co. Sales Tax Already at $2 Million
Fayette County passed the $2 million mark this month for sales tax collection in 2025.
So far this year, the state has rebated $2,014,135 to the county treasury thanks to the local-option retail sales tax. That’s 7.6% more than during the same period last year.
Nine area counties levy the tax. Among them, Austin County has seen the greatest increase this year, up 45.5% for the first seven months of the year.
Caldwell is up 10.1% as of July and Bastrop is up 9.2%. Fayette comes next at 7.6%.
Three counties are actually down from last year’s level, Colorado, Lee and Burleson.
Six of Fayette County’s seven towns have had sales tax increases this year.
La Grange is up by more than $50,000 compared to this time last year. So far in 2025 it has received $1,611,368, compared to $1,561,036 at this point last year. That makes a 3.2% gain.
Fayetteville has seen the greatest percentage increase in the county. It’s up 27.6% on the year.
Round Top also has had a double-digit gain. It’s $333,994 in sales tax receipts amounts to a 14.4% jump.
Schulenburg is the county’s second largest town. Its $786,360 in sales tax is a 3.9% gain over last year.
Flatonia is up 9.8% and Carmine is up 5.0%. Ellinger is the county’s only town to see a decline, a dip of 2.3% from this time last year.
Of the 25 area towns that levy a sales tax, only four are down from last year’s pace.
The region’s largest retail center is Bastrop, which is up 4.9% from last year’s level, followed by Brenham, which is up 4.7%.
The rebates are paid by the State Comptroller’s Office, which also provides the data.
