Fayette Archives Tour Scheduled For Nov. 18
The staff of the Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives is hosting a tour of the Archives when the Fayette County Historical Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, November 18th in the meeting room of the Fayette Public Library in La Grange.
The Museum and Archives is fortunate to have two large temperature-controlled vaults, each with its own fire suppression unit. Additionally, there is a textiles room and large artifacts room to house their collections. However, after more than forty-five years of collecting photographs, documents and scrapbooks, the vaults were almost full.
A mobile high-density shelving system for the downstairs vault was deemed the best solution for adding storage space. A generous grant from the Second Chance Emporium, along with a large donation from the Luck & Loessin Collection Trust and numerous smaller donations, enabled the Museum and Archives to move forward with the project. The final pieces were completed earlier this month.
The new shelving is installed on carriages that move along three long tracks. Ergonomically designed rotating handles easily move the shelves. Unlike traditional shelves, these systems eliminate wasted aisle space to optimize storage. In this case, shelf space has nearly doubled. The vault also contains two new art racks and has room for a work table.
The existing shelving was recycled by moving it upstairs into the Museum’s artifacts room, storage area and workroom where it was much needed.
For the historical commission meeting, the Archives staff is also planning to display some of the newer unusual items in their collections.
Historical commission meetings are held the third Monday of odd-numbered months in various locations around the county. They are always open to the public so anyone may attend. Members are appointed to two-year terms by the Fayette County Commissioners Court. The current chairman is Bobbie Nash.
