Turnout on the first day of early voting was especially high in Fayette County, with a line forming outside the elections office Monday morning.

The Fayette County Elections Office reported a large voter turnout for the first two days of early voting.

Early voting began on Monday, Oct. 21 and continues through Nov. 1 at the Fayette County Elections Office Voting Room at 275 Ellinger Road in La Grange.

By the end of the day on Tuesday, 1,913 people had voted in-person at the County election office. The office had received another 354 ballots by mail, bringing the total voter turnout to 2,267. That amounts to 12.35 percent of all registered voters in Fayette County.

“We were quite active back there in the voting room,” said Fayette County Elections Administrator Terri Hefner.

Turnout appears to be on pace or even slightly ahead of the last presidential election in 2020. But Fayette County has even more registered voters today – 18,353 – compared to four years ago – 17,406.

Hefner reported no problems with voting.

“Everything is going fine,” she said. “Everyone seems to be very happy voting, even waiting in line. Everyone is smiling and happy to be voting.”

Lee County Judge Frank Malinak reported Tuesday that a voting machine at the Giddings Library malfunctioned and was taken out of service. Malinak said the malfunction may have been due to damage that occurred during shipping. He advised voters to review their printed ballots to ensure their votes were cast properly.

Hefner said Fayette County has not experienced any problems with its voting machines.
