Easter on the Bluff is this Saturday in La Grange

The egg hunt at the park will begin at 6:30 p.m. This is a shot from previous Easter hunt there.
Living history demonstrations will be part of Saturday’s event on the bluff.

This Saturday, April 16, Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites will host Easter on the Bluff, reminiscent of a once a popular social occasion at the Bluff Schuetzenverein Pavilion. This year’s event will feature interpretive programs and a children’s egg hunt. Attendees are welcome to bring their own picnics, beverages, and chairs or blankets.

“This event is inspired by the large egg hunts that took place around the Schuetzenverein Pavilion in the early 20th century,” said Assistant Sites Manager Gavin Miculka. The Sites’ oral history collection includes stories of Easter gatherings on the grounds of what is now Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites. Members of the Bluff community would boil and dye eggs in large sugar kettles before hiding them. While the grounds provided a vast area to search for eggs, some adults would keep a few eggs in their pocket and drop them where the youngest egg hunters could find them.

Site staff and volunteers will host living history demonstrations from noon to 4 p.m. that share the history of the Bluff Community and German-Texan Easter traditions at the Kreische House. Visitors will be able to learn how eggs were dyed, food was prepared, and meats were smoked in the late 19th century.

The children’s Egg hunt will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the eggs will be found very quickly, so guests shouldn’t be late. Admission is free for Friends members and children aged five and under, $3 for students and seniors, and $4 for adults.

An Osterfeuer, or Easter bonfire, was originally planned for this event; however, this component is cancelled due to ongoing dry conditions.
