Driver Breaks Through Fence at Historic Site, Flees, But Leaves License Plate

A vehicle crashed through a fence at Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historical Sites sometime Friday night or early Saturday morning.

A neighbor walking by noticed the damage and alerted the site staff Saturday morning, Feb. 5. The staff reported the damage to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office shortly before 8 a.m.

Investigator Angela Lala with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said the vehicle crashed through the fence, dug ruts in the grass and drove out through the same hole in the fence. She said the driver was a 60-year-old female, but she did not release the driver’s name pending possible criminal charges. Investigators were able to track down the driver from a vehicle license plate that fell off at the scene. The driver told investigators that she crashed into the fence after a deer ran in front of her vehicle. The driver did not alert anyone of the damage, however.

Lala said the Sheriff’s Office would present the case to the county attorney for prosecution.

Marsha Hendrix, manager of Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historical Sites, said there were no major damages other than the fence.
