Don’t Mess With Texas – or La Grange
A La Grange resident contacted the Record last week concerning neighbors who leave trash out when it’s not time for pickup, especially bulky items.
This resident, who recently hosted some out-of-town visitors, said, “I was embarrassed by the shape of my own neighborhood.”
We reached out to La Grange City Manager Jack Thompson, who provided the following information to remind residents about the City’s trash pickup policies.
“While we don’t receive a high volume of complaints, we do occasionally get inquiries about garbage pickup— particularly when trash is placed out after the trucks have already passed or on days that are not scheduled for collection,” Thompson said.
For example, he said:
• Household trash should only be placed at the curb in the designated container the night before or the morning of your scheduled pickup day.
• Bulk pickup should be placed at the curb by the Friday before the scheduled Saturday collection. Items should be set at least three feet back from the curb, as trucks begin their routes promptly at 6 a.m. on Saturday.
In addition, the City will provide roll-off containers for residential utility customers for the disposal of hard-to-dispose items. These containers will be available at the Public Works yard on the following dates:
• Monday-Thursday, April 21-24, from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; and
• Friday, April 25 - Saturday, April 26 from 8 a.m. - noon. The following items are not accepted by the City: tires, batteries, construction debris, and paint or chemicals.
Only one set of mattresses per utility bill will be accepted. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioning units must be tagged by a certified technician indicating that refrigerant has been properly removed.
“If a resident places trash at the curb after their scheduled collection day, they are required to remove it and wait until the evening before their next scheduled pickup,” Thompson said. “If it remains at the curb, our Code Enforcement Officer will issue a notice requiring removal.”
Alternatively, Thompson said residents may contact the City for a cost estimate if they’d like to dispose the bulk items at the Public Works yard when bulk pick up is not scheduled.
