One Local Race Decided By Single Vote
Municipal, school board and constitutional amendment elections took place Saturday, May 7. Fayette County voters overwhelmingly approved the two constitutional amendment propositions that were on the ballot. Both passed statewide with more than 80 percent of the vote. Proposition 1 extends statewide property tax relief passed in 2019 to elderly and disabled property owners whose taxes were frozen. Fayette County voters approved it by a vote of 2,059-274. Proposition 2 raised the homestead exemption from $25,000 to $40,000. It passed in Fayette County by a vote of 2,063-310.
The closest race came in the La Grange City Council election for Ward 4. Unofficial results show Arthur Bosque defeating Chris Jernigan by just one vote, 51-50. Jernigan held the seat by appointment since last year after former Councilman Pat Janca moved out of the City and resigned. The election was for a special one-year term.
In the other La Grange elections, incumbent Kathy Weishuhn defeated challenger Sandy Hooper 118-20 in the Ward 1 race. Incumbent Patsy Zbranek defeated challenger Ken Taylor in the Ward 2 race by a vote of 65-44.
In the City of Schulenburg elections, Howard Stoner defeated Tina Bohlmann for Place 3 on the City Council by a vote of 149-128. Stoner will take the seat currently held by Ben Herzik, who did not run for reelection. Incumbent Clarence Ahlschlager was unopposed for Place 4. In the Place 5 race, incumbent and mayor pro tem Larry Veselka defeated challenger Randy Mican by a vote of 145-130.
Flatonia
The City of Flatonia has a new mayor. Dennis Geesaman defeated Cody Rokahr by a vote of 128-49. Flatonia held a four-way, at-large election to fill two seats on the City Council. Joanye Eversole and Allen Kocian gathered the most votes.
Carmine
Carmine voters reauthorized the City’s sales tax rate of onequarter of one percent. The vote was 23-0.
Round Top
Mark Massey ran unopposed for Mayor of Round Top and will retain his seat. Round Top also held a three-way election to fill two seats on the Town Council. Incumbent Lynn Conine lost his seat. The two new Round Top aldermen will be Owen Massey and Jeanette Burger.
LGISD
In school board elections, Anthony Wessels won the threeway race for Place 1 on the La Grange ISD board of trustees with 613 votes. He defeated Blake Harbers, who collected 344 votes, and Jan Hill, who collected 191 votes.
Travis Ulrich won the election for Place 2 on the La Grange school board with 710 votes. He defeated Brandon Schielack (235 votes) and Jim Howse (212 votes). Incumbent Mary White Gunn ran unopposed for Place 3 on the La Grange school board.
Flatonia ISD
In the Flatonia school board elections, Dan Sullivan won the three-way race for Place 1 with 148 votes. He defeated Brian Zbikowski (104 votes) and Rebecca Greuter (96 votes). Jessica Morrill and Tim Rowell ran unopposed for Place 2 and Place 3 on the Flatonia school board.
