The Fayette County Czech Heritage Society met on Sunday, Feb. 6 in the Hanslik Hall of the Texas Czech Heritage and Culture Center (TCHCC) in La Grange, at 2 p.m. for the winter membership meeting. Fourteen members and four guests were present. Two new members were welcomed. The chapter currently has 73 adult members and 12 youth members.

President Betty Danner called the meeting to order and led the pledges to the United States and Texas flags, along with the Heritage Prayer. Alfred Ermis gave the Treasurer’s Report and Vera Wehring read the minutes of the December meeting. Both were approved. Betty Danner then taught a Czech phrase: Pojd’te dal! Which invites visitors to come in!

Director Johnny Polasek installed officers for 2022.

President, Betty Danner, encouraged members to promote the scholarships awarded to high school seniors. The local chapter is awarding a $500 scholarship. The application deadline is March 11 and area high school counselors have information. The Texas Czech Heritage Society also sponsors a $500 Victor Peter High School Scholarship. Information is available at: Czechheritage-texas.org. This application must be postmarked by Feb. 28.

Moreover, our chapter is hosting the Summer State Membership meeting and plans are underway. Additional help is needed, especially on the day of the event.

Members were also reminded that we are actively seeking a candidate for the Miss Czech-Slovak Queen competition. The chapter will provide monetary assistance towards travel expenses and the acquisition of a kroj.

Further, our chapter is always generous in helping with TCHCC events. The annual Family Day will be held on June 25. We will host one or more activity and several members will help in general areas. We ask that you are again generous with your time and talents.

The members were then introduced to current Miss Texas Czech-Slovak, Madison Murphy, and current Miss Czech-Slovak US, Lauren Gerik. Both spoke of their pride in their heritage and their experiences as Queens. They encourage other young ladies to seek the opportunity and offered their help and support. Applicant Information can be found at Czechheritagetexas.org.
