The Czech Oscar-winning historical drama “Brothers” makes its Flatonia and Fayette County premiere on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. at The Lyric Theater in Flatonia, preceded by the short film “The Friendly Tavern.”

Presented by Czech That Film Texas, the annual series of contemporary Czech films for the Lone Star State, “Brothers” tells a true Cold War story of two brothers who, in 1953, try to escape communist Czechoslovakia, join the US army in West Berlin and liberate Communist Czechoslovakia. What ensued is one of the largest manhunts in modern history. Few topics in Czech history evoke as much emotion as the story of the Brothers. (135min, Rated: PG-13). Directed by Czech Tomas Masin, the film won the Czech Oscar for Best Film and was the Czech submission to theAmericanAcademy Awards for Best Foreign Film in 2024. The film was well received recently in Austin and elsewhere in Texas and has been a top box office hit in the Czech lands for 2024.

“The film appeals to broad audiences, especially anyone with an interest in Czech history and Cold War times.” said film series director and programmer Jeffrey Brown who will present the film. “We hope locals will enjoy the short film “The Friendly Tavern” (11 min) preceding “Brothers.”

“The Friendly Tavern” Not to be missed beforehand is the short documentary about one of the town’s favorite haunts from yesteryear, The Friendly Tavern. Directed by Hallettsville native Lori Najvar, this heart-felt community story features the tavern owners Dorothy and Tony Pulkrabek, their tavern and the regulars who hang-out there.

The double bill is presented in partnership with the nonprofit PolkaWorks, Big Day Pictures, and Fayette Savings Bank. Doors open at 1:15 p.m. followed by music from locals Jamie & Darryl at 1:30 p.m. and film starting at 2 p.m.
