Cyclist Dies in Wreck Near Dubina

A bicyclist died in a collision with a pickup truck near Dubina last Wednesday evening, June 5.

The crash happened around 8:19 p.m. on FM 1383 near the intersection of Dubina-Weimar Rd.

Trooper Chase Grillet with the Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the crash. According to his report, 17-year-old Kellen Joseph Mechura of Weimar was driving a white 2015 GMC Sierra pickup south on FM 1383. Gary Alexander Kocurek, 71 of Dubina, was riding a bicycle south on the shoulder of FM 1383.

The report said Mechura slowed down and moved over to safely pass the bicycle, but the bicycle turned in front of the pickup, causing it to strike the bicycle. Kocurek was thrown off the bicycle and landed on the hood of the pickup. The pickup stopped, which caused Kocurek to fall off the hood and land on the pavement.

Kocurek died from injuries at the scene of the wreck. Mechura was not injured. No charges have been filed, according to DPS.

DPS also reported that a person died in a single vehicle crash near Round Top on Sunday, June 9. The vehicle crashed into a tree on SH 237. The investigation into that fatality was not complete in time for this publication.
