County to Support Fayetteville Arts Designation

The City of Fayetteville wants the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) to designate its courthouse square as a cultural district. The Fayette County Commissioners Court signed a resolution supporting the designation at their meeting last Thursday.

If TCA approves the designation, the Fayetteville-based nonprofit Arts for Rural Texas (ARTS) would serve as the managing entity for the district.

“There are a few wonderful advantages to having this designation,”said Sandra Borne, executive director for ARTS. “One is to bring tourism to the community. One is also to pursue a bucket of funding with TCA that we don’t have access to currently. This bucket of funding wouldn’t just help arts organizations or arts events.”

For example, Borne said, Fayetteville’s historic precinct courthouse needs a new roof. The funding through TCA could help the City pay for the new roof, she said.

“I don’t know of any negative to this,” said County Judge Dan Mueller.

The Court unanimously approved the resolution.
