County Extends Burn Ban for Now
Fayette County Commissioners Court held a special meeting on Wednesday, March 16, to consider lifting the burn ban. After about 20 minutes of discussion, they voted unanimously to keep the ban in place for now.
“The other night the north side of the County, Warda and Winchester, got plenty of rain and its starting to green up,” said Pct. 1 Commissioner Jason McBroom. “But I was working in Cistern and it’s dry as a bone. What people have to realize is this is for the whole County.”
Ammannsville area resident Mark Brown, who serves as president of the South Central Texas Prescribed Burn Association, said he and two of his organizations members wish to burn tall grass on their pastures. Brown said spring is the ideal time of year to burn pastures. He asked whether Commissioners would allow an exemption for groups like his. McBroom said the County would consider his proposal.
“It’s greening up a little, but I don’t think it’s there yet,” said Pct. 4 Commissioner Drew Brossmann.
“We have a good chance of rain on Monday,” McBroom said. “If we get that, we’ll put it on the agenda for the next meeting and see where we’re at. If we can get a little green and get these crazy winds to stop, we’ll be OK.”
