County Calf Scramble Created

The first annual Fayette County Calf Scramble will take place during the Schulenburg Festival Rodeo on Aug. 1 and 2.

The event will be open to all youth in Fayette County. Registration is required, and only six spots were left as of Tuesday, June 3. To be eligible, participants must be a Fayette County student in grades 6 through 11.

Twelve student-athletes will compete Friday night, Aug. 1, and another 12 will compete Saturday night, Aug. 2. There will be six winners each night.

“Our goal is to award a $1,000 certificate to those who catch a calf,” said Stephanie Prihoda, one of the organizers.

If any of the winners already have a show animal, they can use the money on feed. Prihoda said the winners will also be eligible for an additional $200 prize for developing a business plan and writing an essay at the time when they show their animal.

“We want to encourage more students to get involved with FFA and 4-H,” Prihoda said.

Prihoda said she’s been involved with the Houston Livestock Show Calf Scramble for several years and wanted to bring a similar experience to Fayette County.

In Houston, competitors have to halter the calf and then drag it to the finish line. Prihoda said the calves in Schulenburg will already be haltered, similar to the Austin Rodeo calf scramble. Competitors will just have to catch one and attach a lead rope before dragging it to the finish line.

Prihoda said organizers are also collecting donations. For more information, or to make a donation, contact Prihoda at (979) 393-8023 or smprihoda@ gmail.com, or Kylee Zapalac at (979) 743-1755 or kzapalac@schulenburgisd. net.
