A crew from Joe Rogers Dozer Service of La Grange went to the Hill Country last week to help with cleanup and recovery efforts from the July 4 floods.

Rogers along with six of his heavy equipment operators arrived at Camp La Junta in Hunt last week with a convoy of dump trucks and 18 wheelers loaded with skid steers and backhoes.

“We know a guy at Camp La Junta, and he asked us to come help,” Rogers said.

The camp, located on the South Fork of the Guadalupe River, was evacuated on July 4 with everyone safe and accounted for. The rescue effort there was nothing short of heroic. A story in USA Today details the amazing risks camp counselors took to get the 400 children staying there to high ground.

But the camp grounds were devastated by the flood.

“We’re repairing roads and moving debris,” Rogers said. “There’s debris everywhere. We’re basically trying to clear the trees and make big burn piles.”

Rogers said rescue workers were still recovering bodies in the vicinity of the camp when we spoke to him last Friday.

He said the volunteer response from around the State has been incredible.

“There are probably more skid steers in these couple of counties than the whole State of Texas right now,” Rogers said.
