The future looks bleak for the old public swimming pool in La Grange.

The La Grange City Council was set to meet Monday night, June 9, and one of the items on the agenda was to discuss and consider action to hire a contractor to demolish the swimming pool at Kruschel Park. The pool hasn’t been open since 2023. Back in May of last year, the Council voted to close the pool following a recommendation from staff. At that time, City Recreation Director Janet Rangel cited several reasons including broken pumps and a lack of lifeguards.

Then in December, City Manager Jack Thompson informed the Council that the old pool was no longer functional. He said the City would consider various alternatives while developing a new parks and trails master plan.

The public pool in Schulenburg has been closed for the past two summers as well. City leaders there cited a lack of lifeguards. That leaves only one public swimming pool in Fayette County – Flatonia’s public swimming pool in McWhirter Park.

Monday’s La Grange City Council meeting took place after this issue was published. Look for more on this story in Friday’s paper.
