Celebrate Independence Day in Muldoon

Here’s a map of the Muldoon 4th of July parade route.
Celebrate Independence Day in Muldoon

On Saturday, July 4, Muldoon is coming alive and celebrating our nation’s 250th anniversary. It all begins with a big parade at 10 a.m. Come early and line up in the Muldoon Mercantile parking lot and parade through “downtown” Muldoon and through the park. Come and join in by decorating a trailer as a float, decorate your bike, your truck, car or utv. Or maybe just decorate yourself and walk. What a fun way to celebrate the 4th of July and our nation’s birthday.

If you are not up to all that red, white and blue decorating, be sure and line up along the parade route and celebrate those who are maybe a little more outspoken in their patriotism. Be sure and bring your lawn chair for all the activities that will ensue.

After the parade clears and everyone has a chance to come back to the park, there will be all kinds of fun activities lined up. There will be a “best decorated hat” contest, which is always interesting and very fun. A cake and plant walk is planned along with a silent auction that will be raising funds to maintain and upgrade the park facilities. There also will be some auction items that are there to raise funds for the Muldoon Museum. Donations of items for the auction are still needed to make this a fun and profitable auction. All the funds will be used to help with the Muldoon community facilities.

This will also be the perfect time to meet the new board that has been very active in getting the community park back on its feet and used more for community functions. If you are thinking of you need a local open-air place to use for family reunions and such, this is a great time to find out all the details on how to use the park.

July 4th in the park this year will have a live band for the first time. This musical addition will add yet another layer of fun and entertainment. All this will be going on at the park and it gives everyone a chance to catch up with their neighbors and visit in a very relaxed atmosphere.

To top off the day there will be a picnic in the park. Hot dogs will be served and everyone is asked to bring their favorite side dish and dessert to share, so bring a lot and show off your culinary skills. A freewill donation will be collected to offset the cost of the meal and celebration.

To make sure you have a seat at this fun and festive celebration be sure to bring along your most comfortable lawn chair to kick back, eat a hot dog and listen to some fantastic music all while getting to know your neighbors and celebrate the 4th of July.

For more information or to make arrangements for donation of items, please contact the new park president Antoniette Syler-Joplin at (979) 561-6973. This is also your chance to get involved in the park association and keep the park alive and active for years to come.

Museum Open

While in Muldoon for the 4th of July make a point of coming early and visiting the Muldoon Museum. The museum will have their doors open at 8:30 a.m. and will close at 10 a.m. as the parade begins.

The museum has a lot of Muldoon history inside their doors. There are pictures from the past, old quilts and quilt frames, loads of items from Muldoon’s railroad history along with an array of household items.

Come stroll through the history that made Muldoon. There also is a veteran’s memorial for those who served our nation to keep her safe. This is a great way to start your 4th of July morning.

Tree Trimmers

The state-contracted tree trimmers are out and about in the Muldoon area trimming the tree limbs that are protruding out into the highway right of way. Use caution when driving past for workers and machinery along with flying debris. Also pay attention to the roadways for debris that was thrown onto the road surface from the mulching machine clearing the brush.

This is a little bit of a hazard now, but it is making things on the road much safer in the long run. Wildlife entering the roadways will be visible sooner with the brush trimmed back.

Out and About

Pam Sheffield traveled to Sherman recently to a family reunion. It was her birth father’s family whom she reconnected with a few years ago. Her birth father passed in 2021, but the family continues the reunion every year with whomever is able to attend. Pam’s stepmom, SuZanne, lives in Sherman, so the family travels from all over Texas, New Mexico, and Mississippi for the reunion. Her three sisters live in those three states and have made a tradition to stay in touch. Carolyn is the oldest and lives in New Mexico, along with her two daughters Shelley and Becky, and their families. Terri is second oldest and lives in Mississippi with her three daughters, Allison, Amy, and Christy and their families. Pam is the third and lives here in Muldoon. The baby sister is Gerri and she lives in Fort Worth with her family. It was a small gathering this year with only SuZanne, the four sisters, and niece Shelley’s family. They always rent a big house with a pool for everyone to share. Three of their close cousins who all live in Texas enjoyed laughter, stories from the past, and tons of good food.

Neighborhood Watch

Now is a good time to be aware of what is going on in our community. Keep aware of strange vehicles traveling through the area. Take note of the type of vehicle, license number, when and where you saw them. Write down this information for future reference, just in case. If they seem to be hanging out around your neighbors’ place, give that neighbor a call and let them know or call the sheriff’s office to let them check it out. If everything is OK, then all is good, but if not you can prevent a crime.

We all have to pull together to keep the area safe. Get to know your neighbors and we can all watch out for each other.
